King Cake Countdown Party - Friday, Jan 5, 9pm-midnight

Join us at Zony Mash to ring-in the Carnival Season with music, food, beer and The Second Annual  King Cake Monarch Pageant! We’ll get started at 9pm on Friday (the eve of Carnival) and will end the event by sharing the first king cake together at midnight!Doors are 8pm.  By 9pm Elektra Cosmetics will be on site to help everyone get sparkly! Matt Haines will be with us signing The Big Book of King Cake as well as his latest The Little Book of King Cake. At King Cake Hub, the tradition goes on after loss of its founder

By Jeanne d'Arcy, Uptown Messenger The King Cake Hub, a Carnival pop-up, opened for its fourth season Jan. 6 with its traditional Twelfth Night kickoff party at a new location next to the Zony Mash Beer Project at South Broad and Thalia Street.  As usual, the first sweet taste of Carnival was enjoyed to live music, Mardi Gras Indian chants and costumed dance troupes at a kickoff event hosted by Professor Carl Nivale and Grand Marshal Marty Graw. There was something missing, however: the energetic presence of King Cake Hub co-founder Will Samuels. Samuels died in September 2021 at 52. Remembering Will Samuels

Will Samuels, the King Cake Hub co-founder, died in 2021 at the age of 52. In the true spirit of New Orleans, he and Jennifer Samuels worked to bring together the very best of Mardi Gras traditions of music, food and fun and share them with the rest of us.    Will began working in radio and music in college and continued as a DJ after graduating with a degree in communications. On air and off, Will kept us entertained, telling jokes just to make himself laugh. In the process, he made everyone around him laugh. He continued to work in music with his brother Mark, at Basin Street Records. He was a fixture in the New Orleans Jewish Community, leading youth...
